War-torn Yemen faces a renewed threat of conflict, jeopardizing the fragile progress made toward peace and plunging millions deeper into despair. The escalation of tensions in the Red Sea casts a long shadow on the country's already dire humanitarian situation.

The UN Special Envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, warned that the recent hostilities could unravel the hard-won gains achieved through the April 2022 truce. This period of relative calm provided a glimmer of hope for millions of Yemenis struggling with food insecurity, malnutrition, and a collapsing healthcare system.

Edem Wosornu, of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, painted a grim picture. Recent assessments show a significant increase in food insecurity and malnutrition, with millions on the brink of starvation. Funding shortfalls threaten critical aid programs, potentially pushing the country back into a full-blown famine.

Members of the UN Security Council expressed deep concern about the deteriorating situation. They urged all parties to exercise restraint and prioritize a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

The UN and Security Council members called for an immediate ceasefire and a renewed focus on the political process. Reaching a durable ceasefire and inclusive peace talks is the only way to end the suffering of the Yemeni people.

Urgent action is needed to prevent Yemen from slipping back into war. The international community must step up its support by:

  • Increasing funding for humanitarian aid programs

  • Pressing all parties to respect international law and human rights

  • Supporting a UN-led political process that includes all Yemeni voices, particularly women.

Only through concerted international effort can Yemen emerge from this crisis and build a lasting peace. The time for action is now.
